Guava Island is a movie by actor-rapper Donald Glover that premiered the night before his last performance as Childish Gambino at Coachella 2019. Filmed on location in Cuba, directed by frequent Glover collaborator, Hiro Murai, and written by Glover’s brother Stephen.
It is a vivid 55-minute track that tells a story of music, freedom, greed, and the oppressive nature of capitalism. It also includes interpretations of Glover’s recent hits and serves as a farewell to Childish Gambino’s pseudonym, which Glover has announced he wants to retire after the “This Is America Tour”.
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
The story begins like a fairy tale: Kofi grew up on a small fictional island in the Caribbean listening to his mother’s stories about the beautiful blue silk that grows in his native land and the greed that follows. One day, she hears a man named Deni playing in front of her window the most beautiful music she has ever heard, and they fall in love. Deni, with his shirt open and his guitar, slung over his shoulder, struggles with the idea that he and everyone else on the island have to work all the time for Red, the silk industry tycoon.
Kofi and her best friend Yara spend their day sewing in a sweatshop, while Deni divides her time between a sponsored radio show and the shipping docks. The big boss Red does not believe in days of rest but Deni dreams of reuniting his island for a night of fun with a music festival. Red doesn’t like it, of course, and warns Deni to cancel the festival, otherwise. Of course, Deni, who can’t stand to see his friends and neighbors kill each other instead of having fun, organizes the festival anyway, and he suffers the consequences. Throughout the movie, the story is interrupted by remixes of songs by Childish Gambino that are loosely related to the plot.
