DISCOVER ALL THE NEWS ABOUT THE RELEASE OF BLACK WIDOW 2! RELEASE DATE, RENEWAL, AND MORE.
Black Widow is the first solo movie of the eponymous Marvel Comics character after making his debut in Iron Man 2 in 2010. The superhero movie is directed by Cate Shortland from a script written by Eric Pearson based on a story by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson. This is the first movie in Phase 4 of the MCU, and it takes place after the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. For a detailed explanation of the post-credits scene, read this.
In Black Widow, we find Natasha on the run from the US government and dependent on a host of Russian connections from her past to finally complete a mission she began long ago. The stakes are high but the peril is low as we know Natasha will make it out alive and in one piece, but it’s still a hugely effective action blockbuster that feels a bit more brutal than most of the efforts of the MCU. But what about a possible Black Widow 2?
WHAT RELEASE DATE FOR BLACK WIDOW 2?
While time travel and the introduction of Loki variants could very well bring Scarlett Johansson back to the role of Black Widow in the future, the actress herself doesn’t seem excited about the idea of a return. In a recent interview, she said she was very satisfied and wanted to go to the top.
That doesn’t close the door entirely, but like Tony Stark’s sacrifice, to revisit Natasha’s poignant death would be doing Endgame’s story a disservice. Another prequel might work, but Black Widow appears to be passing the torch to Florence Pugh’s Yelena, who will continue in the MCU as a new Black Widow. For the explanation of Black Widow’s ending and the sequel for Yelena, read this.
There is no release date information for Black Widow 2, but if Yelena Belova gets her movie, chances are it will arrive in Phase 5 at the earliest. Which would give us a release date for Black Widow 2 around summer 2023.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE BLACK WIDOW SUITE?
Black Widow 2 could take place in the current era of the MCU and focus on Yelena, trying to pass on Natasha’s legacy. The sequel could introduce the Winter Guard, a team of Russian superheroes. The Red Guardian could also have a bigger role, given their connection to the team in the comics.
WHO COULD BE AT THE BLACK WIDOW 2 CASTING?
If Cate Shortland gets her way with Black Widow 2 following different characters, then Scarlett Johansson won’t be returning for Black Widow 2 unless flashbacks are involved.
Taskmaster can come back now that she is released from her father. One also wonders what happens to Milena (Rachel Weisz) and the Red Guardian (David Harbor), who could return, and a second appearance by Mason (O-T Fagbenle) would be welcome.
