This film is primarily an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1957 novel of the same name. Deep Waters follows Vic and Melinda, who is in a loveless marriage trying to avoid the messy divorce process, and there is such a couple willing to make a deal that reveals Vic allowing Melinda to have many affairs as long as their family stays together.
Vic becomes envious and begins praying for her to find her true love, and it appears to be a simple affair. Deep Waters, on the other hand, is not based on a true story. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1957 psychological thriller novel of the same name, and it follows a screenplay by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson. The book is based on the 1981 French thriller “Deep Waters” by director Michel Deville, as is the two-part German TV movie “Tiefe Wasser,” with both films shifting the plot to their respective countries. Deep Waters weaves a complex dynamic between the central couple, exploring their relationship while shrouding the unsaid that binds them in mystery.
Audiences, like Vic and Melinda, are unsure whether their relationship is on the mend or on the verge of a violent implosion. The perspectives of the main characters are also detailed in such a way that their motivations are clear, which adds to the intrigue of the story.
While the premise is unusual, it is plausible enough to take the central characters’ dilemmas seriously, with the “crime of passion” aspect lurking in the background. Deep Waters could be mistaken for a detective story at first glance. The film and book on which it is based, on the other hand, are much more complex fictional narratives that play on deep human emotions and relationships.
