When their respective law firms merged in 1966, her husband, John Mitchell, met Richard Nixon. When Nixon was elected president in 1968, he appointed his close friend John as US Attorney General. The only issue is that his family must relocate from Arkansas to the District.
Gaslit, a new Starz series available on Canal+, tells a story of Martha Mitchell’s wild and sometimes heartbreaking involvement in the Watergate scandal, but is it based on true events? To know the premiere date of season 2 read this!
IS GASLIT AN ACTUAL STORY?
Gaslit is, in fact, based on a true story. The narrative presented, however, has been dramatized, as with most series based on true events. Gaslit is more than just an homage to his mother’s favorite son. It’s a complex story of power and greed with a humorous undercurrent.
The series also honors lesser-known whistleblowers, particularly Martha Mitchell. Martha didn’t get credit for being one of the first to try to inform the public about what was going on. On the contrary, she has been repeatedly mocked over the years. Pickering hopes to change that with Gaslit.
The CRP, according to the archives, funded this operation to obtain photographed copies of Democratic campaign documents and to place wiretaps. It was ultimately unsuccessful, and five burglars were apprehended.
The Nixon administration tries but fails, to conceal its involvement in this affair. The burglars, along with Mitchell and others, are charged for their roles in the conspiracy, and Nixon is forced to resign as President of the United States of America.
According to the show’s creator, the show focuses on ambition and complicity and how they are frequently linked. Gaslit is also involved in two marriages. Former White House adviser Dean and his wife Mo’s marriage survived the ordeal, but Martha and John divorced in 1973.
Martha’s final years were extremely difficult. She had no friends because of Watergate, no money, and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, according to reports. Martha passed away on May 31, 1976.
