IS THE NORTHMAN INFORMED BY A REAL-LIFE STORY?
The Northman is not based on a true story but was written by Robert Eggers and Sjon based on an ancient myth and folktale from the Old North. This traditional tale was Vita Amlethi.
Vita Amlethi was a story passed down orally from generation to generation that was not officially recorded until around 1200 as part of the comprehensive history of Danish rulers and Saxo Grammaticus. These are the fundamentals of the story that inspired The Northman and other famous tales throughout history, such as Hamlet by William Shakespeare.
AMLETH EXISTED? IS THIS A REAL PERSON?
The Norse folktale Vita Amlethi translates to “The Life of Amleth.” Even though Amleth is not necessarily based on an actual historical figure, the folktale conveys the character’s legend.
While the narrative of The Northman is inspired by this legend, the main character, Amleth, is taken almost verbatim from the Norse tale.
Amleth is a young Viking prince who lives happily with his father, Horwendil, and his mother, Gerutha, in Vita Amlethi.
However, Horwendil’s brother Fengo harbors a jealous hatred of his king Horwendil and kills him, marrying Gerutha. Amleth flies into a rage and vows vengeance against his uncle for the crimes committed against his family.
It is unknown whether the character of Amleth is based on actual events or historical figures, but this figure serves as the inspiration for Alexander Skarsgard’s lead role in The Northman.
